‘Tis the Season for Christmas Stories

Although it’s supposed to be the “happiest time of the year”, Christmas can often be the exact opposite of that for many people.  It’s a stressful time, often fraught with resentment and unrealistic expectations that are put upon us by others as well as by ourselves.  These real-life scenarios are fodder for some of the best Christmas mysteries that our favorite authors have penned.  You only have to open the pages of Christie’s Hercule Poirot’s Christmas (also known as A Holiday for Murder) or The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding, to see families at their worst behaviour.  Some of the best stories can be found in any of the many anthologies of Christmas mysteries which contain contributions from a multitude of great writers.

For a gentle, cozy Christmas mystery, A Highland Christmas by M.C. Beaton fits the bill.  In Lochdubh, Scotland, Constable Hamish Macbeth has his hands full with a theft of Christmas goods, a frightened old woman and a distraught young girl as he battles the Calvinist sector of the community who resists anything to do with Christmas.  It’s a feel-good story which will warm the heart of even the biggest Scrooge!

May you all have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
